Math - Problem Solving (on-going throughout the year):
We have two things that we focus on when solving a problem, understanding/solving the problem and communicating our thinking and strategies. After examining some of the work they produced, students came up with a list of goals/characteristics that their should show when they solve problems.
Here's what we're aiming to do:

Goals when solving problems:
- identify important information from the problem - show that you understand the problem (through the work that you do) - explain the strategy that you used, it should be a strategy that could lead to the right answer - calculations are shown and correct Communication: - work is organized and in a logical order - use words, symbols, numbers, pictures, math symbols (+ - x ÷ =) and math language - explain the connection between the work that you did and the question (how do you know your answer makes sense) - clearly indicate the answer to the question. |
Resources - there a couple of graphic organizers that I have made available for students. One (from Mme. Ida last year) for the 3 read strategy. Another for breaking down the steps when solving a problem. Students may use one, both, or none, in which case they should be showing their work on looseleaf. Both are in this PDF document.

Finish from Math class (due Friday, Sept. 23):
